After 15 years, 13 seasons, 138 episodes, and 4 series renames, the beloved Aqua Teen Hunger Force; Adult Swim’s longest running original series has officially come to a close with the episode “The Last One Forever and Ever (We Fucking Mean It)”. In the series finale Frylock, Shake, and Meatwad search for an replacement jewel for Frylock as his is running completely out of power, meaning that his life is close to ending.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1/Something You Know Whatever/TV Show Show/Forever), is an 2001 animated series. It is produced by Williams Street, and aired on Adult Swim from 2001-2015. It is available for viewing in multiple formats.
After 15 years of laughter, the Aqua Teen squad of Frylock, Shake, Meatwad, and Carl say goodbye. This series cancellation/finale was particularly upsetting for me as I literally went through my teenage years watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Having seen literally every single one of the 138 episodes, multiple times, it didn’t take long to realize that Aqua Teen Hunger Force was one of those shows where you could see your favorite episode 5 times within a single month and it’d still be funny. It would have been nice if the latter seasons had cameos from characters that made the first five so special, rather than having them merely appear in the opening credit scenes. Seeing MC Pee Pants, the Mooninites, and others would have definitely brought the laughs, but for what they were, the final seasons were still pretty hilarious.
Warning: This review contains complete to near complete spoilers for the series finale, you have been warned.
THE GOOD: The series finale for Aqua Teen Hunger Force had some heavy reveals, such as Frylock being near dead, Shake also having a power jewel attached to him (as well as Meatwad, who can survive without his jewel), and Meatwad gets married and has a family! Carl was once again attempting a get rich quick scheme by attempting to haggle Frylock’s jewel for cash. There were some laughs present, but the focus was clearly on wrapping up the story, which is understandable, as Aqua Teen Hunger Force had a history of jumping between heavy focus on laughs and heavy focus on story with every other episode.
THE BAD: While it’s admirable that Dave Willis and co were focused on wrapping up the story, a few more laughs would have been appreciated considering it was the series finale. Frylock, Meatwad, Shake, and Carl (and his friend), were the only characters featured in the episode, while not necessarily bad, as I previously mentioned, it would have been awesome to see cameos from popular secondary characters, especially given the double episode length.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The series finale of Aqua Teen Huger Force was a fun episode that focused heavily on story and less on laughs, while more laughs would have been appreciated, it’s understandable why the team went with this direction. No cameos from key secondary characters like the Mooninites was super disappointing from a fan perspective. With the second film being cancelled, this truly is the end of the series, unless Netflix or another platform opts to buy it for revival or reboot. Here’s hoping for Blu-Ray releases in the future. Otaku Dome gives “The Last One Forever and Ever (We Fucking Mean It)” an 80 out of 100.
