The second to last film before Marvel’s big MCU release Avengers 4 is releasing on home media. Taking place prior to “Infinity War” Scott Lang has been under house for two years due to his actions in “Captain America: Civil War”, but Hank Pym & Hope van Dyne need his help in the possible retrieval of Hank’s wife Janet from the quantum realm.
Ant-Man and The Wasp is a 2018 superhero film and the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, it is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It releases on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K on October 16, 2018, and is currently available on digital download.
Editor’s Note: A 4K combo review copy of Ant-Man and The Wasp was provided by Disney & Marvel Studios in support of this review.
In the sequel to sleeper hit Ant-Man, titular leads Ant-Man & Wasp are looking to enter the quantum realm to aide Hank Pym in the retrieval of his wife (Hope’s mother) Janet. Things get difficult when a young woman going under the alias of Ghost can phase through objects due to molecular instability and she needs Hank’s tech which she believes can fix her.
THE GOOD: Ant-Man and The Wasp is one of the more lighthearted of the recent crop of the MCU films, with Infinity War, Black Panther, and Thor: Ragnarok being apart of that bunch Ant-Man & Wasp isn’t afraid of avoiding the more dark & tragic in favor the more comical & outlandish. Actor performances remained quite entertaining from beginning to end and the dynamic chemistry between Paul Rudd & Evangeline Lily is some of the best within the MCU’s entirety. In regards to the 4K itself though it’s locked at 2160p the visual improvements still show some noticeable pops in quality here and there from the standard releases of the film. But when one watches a superhero film and is expecting anything past 1080p producers really should consider getting it as close to full 4K as humanly possible for the best results for those into that sort of thing.
THE BAD: Some characters such as Lang’s X-Con Security could have used some more fleshing out. There was also a few too many subplots spread throughout the film creating a bit of unbalance.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While not perfect Ant-Man and The Wasp is such a detachment from the current direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that it more than holds its own as a standalone sequel. Character development is strong for the leads and the comedy is some of the best, in addition to the fantastic on-screen chemistry of Rudd & Lily. These elements blend together to make a very good & different Marvel film. Otaku Dome gives Ant-Man and The Wasp an 85 out of 100.
