Fan-favorite video game Angels of Death now has an anime courtesy of J.C. Staff. Adapting the source material of the video game, Angels of Death follows a 13 year old girl named Rachael Gardner who awakens in a factory with her memories erased outside of knowing her name, she soon meets an infamous killer named Zack who promises to grant her wish of being killed by him if she aides him in escaping.

Angels of Death is a 2018 seinen anime adaptation of the video game of the same name, it is produced by J.C. Staff, and licensed by Funimation (home release) and Hulu & Crunchyroll for streaming.

Editor’s Note: Near complete to complete spoilers for Angels of Death may be present within this review.

Rachael and Zack as they appear in the anime.

If you’re coming from the video game which precedes it, then you’ll be happy to know that the anime adaptation of Angels of Death adapts nearly every scene to perfection. The relationship building of Ray and Zack is on full display in the anime adaptation as well and the action scenes, as dark as they are, are fun to watch throughout its 16 episode run.

Escape the madness in Angels of Death.

THE GOOD: In Angels of Death 13 year old Rachael Gardner is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation by a doctor named Danny. After the evaluation is complete she comes to realize that all of her memories outside of who she is have been erased. Leaving what she thought was a doctor’s office, she finds herself in a mysterious factor and comes across Issac “Zack” Foster a serial killer who’s trapped within the factory. When she loses Zack she slowly begins to regain some of her memories of the past and coming to understand what she’s done she begs Zack to kill her when she becomes an emotionless wreck. The relationship building of Rachael and Zack is an odd, but enjoyable one, especially when the series delves deep into Ray’s psyche showing she’s just as crazy as Zack. Side characters such as Danny an eye-obsessed doctor and Cathy a religious psychopath expand the world and act as plot devices to extend what we know about Zack and Rachael as we are introduced to the later characters.

The relationship between Ray and Zack is one of the series’ strongest elements, but it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

THE BAD: The violence while not as dark and bleak as it could be, likely still won’t be for everyone. Not to mention the pretty fucked up friendship of a 13 year old and a crazed serial killer.

The journey into the psyches of Ray and Zack, as well as the small but enjoyable cast of side characters makes the series watchable.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I kind of feel like Angels of Death will be very hit and miss for anime onlys who have no prior history with the video game which precedes it. However, fans of the video game can at least enjoy the fact that it adapts the anime from a story perspective to a T. Otaku Dome gives Angels of Death a 75 out of 100.
