The first season of American Crime Story comes home to DVD and Blu-Ray. Focusing on the famed trial of football star O.J. Simpson, American Crime Story’s initial run acts as a loose adaption of the Jeffrey Toobin book The Run of His Life: The People vs O.J. Simpson rather than a clear cut play by play of the actual court case.
American Crime Story is an 2016 crime drama anthology series, it is produced by FOX 21 Studios, and distributed by 20th Television. It is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
American Crime Story is FX’s latest anthology series this time tackling true crime drama, while previous anthology American Horror Story takes on the horror genre. Focusing on the O.J. Simpson murder trial, American Crime Story retells the events of one of the biggest trials in celebrity trial history. The O.J. trial admittedly is a rather odd first choice for a true crime retelling series, however.
THE GOOD: American Crime Story opts to focus on the book of the same name as it’s first season rather than an word for word recall of the events that took place. It’s great seeing Cuba Gooding Jr get more lead roles in modern TV Land, his career lately felt as if he was in a bit of a stand still with some odd ball runs with film and TV shows here and there throughout the last several years.
THE BAD: I mentioned earlier that it was a bit strange for FX to opt for the O.J. Simpson trial as the first season arc, as it feels very ‘been there, done that’. Season two is supposedly going to focus on Hurricane Katrina, so this issue might persist for a quite some time, which is annoying to say the least.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While an add first choice for the pilot arc, American Crime Story’s writing, pacing, and casting does bring a bit of originality to an already well known trial case. Though suffering from familiarity issues, American Crime Story is a great dramatic retelling anthology series which will likely get better as time goes on and more originality in the cases covered is given. Otaku Dome gives American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson Blu-Ray an 80 out of 100.
