Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles closes the gap on the heartbreaking fourth season, as well as kicks off the fifth and final season in “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder”. In this set we get the death of two key characters, introductions to new characters, and the return of some familiar faces.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an 2012 animated reboot of the franchise of the same name. It is produced by Nickelodeon Studios & licensed by Viacom, it is currently available on DVD.
Since its launch in October of 2012, the initial disdain of Nickelodeon’s reboot of the core TMNT story was quickly reversed, with many fans & critics praising its direction, action sequences, animation, and story. Now after a five year run, the series is coming to an unfortunate close, with Nick opting to give the series a soft reboot similar in vein to Teen Titans Go! in 2018.
THE GOOD: This set includes the final episodes of season 4 and the first four or five episodes of season five. In season four’s penultimate episode the Turtles face a devastating loss as Splinter is killed protecting April, Raphael, Slash, and Casey from Super Shredder. In the season final the Turtles get revenge when Leonardo finally kills Shredder on a flaming rooftop. Season five looks to answer some remaining questions, while also introducing some of the final characters from the current comic incarnation.
THE BAD: A number of season five episodes from here on out seem to be filler, which is unfortunate as the Kavaxas story was only a mere four episodes long.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While season four ends on an extremely high note, season five is looking a little worrying with seemingly too much filler. Granted this is the final season of Nick’s initial TMNT series, but hopefully we receive a satisfying close for the well beloved reboot. Otaku Dome gives Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder a 84 out of 100.
