The final hurrah to Death Note creator Takeshi Obata’s School Judgement comes in the third and final volume. In a story very much like Kids Court meets Ace Attorney, School Judgement: Gakkyu Hotei is a story about children solving very adult crimes in court at their middle school, These crimes ranged from murder to drug use to all other adult themed criminal acts.
School Judgement is an 2014 Shounen, mystery, manga series, it is produced Shueisha, and licensed by Viz Media.
While a fine series in its own right, School Judgement: Gakkyu Hotei was unfortunately cancelled due to low sales. This left only enough content for three volumes, and unfortunately for fans, an anime adaption is very much in doubt due to the seeming lack of popularity overseas and in the States. Rather unfortunate, as despite being hit or miss for t’s three volume run, School Judgement can be quite good.
THE GOOD: The stakes are higher than ever in the final volume of School Judgement, this time in the final chapters Tento once again finds himself accused of murder, and Abaku’s other classmates have found their lives threatened by a mysterious character, looking for Abaku to reveal his or her true identity before graduation. If Abaku fails everyone he knows and then some will be dead.
THE BAD: It kind of feels like the plot for the latter half of the series was reduxed for the sake of time constraints to get the last bit of the story out. I also didn’t think there was enough time between the last two arcs, but it’s forgivable due to the sudden cancellation.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: I must admit it’s a bit sad seeing School Judgement: Gakkyu Hotei end it’s run before any real potential could be met. The story had some intrigue, the characters were fun, and the themes were pretty surprising to say the least. However, the penultimate arc felt like a redux in an attempt to save on time, which was rather upsetting if so. Otaku Dome gives School Judgement Volume 3 an 82 out of 100.
