The Ring series comes to a (likely) close with Rings on home media. In the final film to the let’s say original trilogy, a group of college students experiment with the Ring tape believing there to be a way to survive the eventual wrath of Samara. As the experiment and the mystery around it unfold, they learn the dark history of Samara’s past.
Rings is a 2017 horror film, it is produced Vertigo Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is currently available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital HD.
Originally adapted from a series of Japanese horror films of the same name; of which were adapted from novels, the Ring franchise has terrorized both American and Japanese audiences. Having a major following in both countries the eventual spawn of a trilogy comes to no surprise with success in both the box office and home media.
THE GOOD: In what one could only perceive to be called the ‘original trilogy’ of The Ring franchise, Samara’s story comes to a rather dreadful close. After getting redemption from her dark past and her evil father. College students Julia & Holt aide Samara in her redemption, unknowingly causing a “rebirth” of Samara through Julia.
THE BAD: While there are a few jump scares here and there, one of Rings’ biggest problems is the fact that it’s truly not scary. As stated there are moments that intensify throughout, it won’t be much here for a general horror movie buff (like myself). Another problem is the film kind of feels a bit of “been there, done that”. At the very least the trilogy does get a entertaining close, albeit with a cliffhanger ending.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: While promising, Rings fails to live up to its hype due to a lack of scares and not enough lack of rehashing, which is rather unfortunate considering the possibility of this being the final film for the US version. Otaku Dome gives Rings a 65 out of 100.
