The Wolfenstein reboot continues with The New Colossus out now on PC and console. Taking place five or so months after the events of the of the first game, an injured William “B.J.” Blazkowicz is retrieved from Deathshead’s fortress and slips in and out of consciousness. Healed by his love Anya, he returns to combat but realizes the situation with the Nazis is more dire than first thought.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a 2017 first-person shooter, it is developed by Machine Games and published by Bethesda. It is currently available on PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and soon Nintendo Switch.

Editor’s Note: An Xbox One review copy of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was provided by Bethesda.

Time to throttle some Nazis again.

Bethesda is looking to save single player games and Wolfenstein II is a step in the right direction. One of the few first person shooters of recent memory to complete avoid a multiplayer component cheaply tacked on or otherwise, Wolfenstein II focuses heavily on gameplay, story, and character development. From the opening recap at the start of the game to the big finale, the sequel to the 2015 hit never loses a beat of quality passed down from its predecessor.

A beautiful tragedy unfolds in Wolfenstein II.

THE GOOD: One of Wolfenstein II’s key components is its story, it features a crazy what if WWII story of the Axis Powers in control after securing victory in the previous game and an even more insane cast of characters which are fun to interact with and see thrive throughout it’s run. If you just so happened to skip out on “The First Order” but for whatever reason picked up The New Colossus regardless, Wolfenstein II has players new to the reboot covered with a pretty neat recap that starts the game as it installs. Unlike most game recaps which are only a few minutes in length, Wolfenstein II’s is quite big in size and does a fantastic job covering the first game’s story content.

Wolfenstein II boasts one of the greatest dual-wielding mechanics you’ll find in gaming.

Enemy AI is high, surprisingly high even when playing a mostly balanced but admittedly easy at times difficulty mode like medium players will find some fierce gun battles with the opening hours of the game onward. Even outside of just a large group of enemies coming at players. much more powerful singular enemies will show up making focusing on them as well as any other interfering enemies challenging.

Wolfenstein II successfully reminds us why single player games matter.

THE BAD: In a rather unfortunate trait of Bethesda titles there are a few bugs present such as game freezes and lag. Though they tend to be rare, when they do occur it really slows down the experience.

Wolfenstein II is the sequel with a lot to say.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is an action packed, story driven sequel that continues the success of the Wolfenstein reboot. Nothing about the game feels like a tacked on mess which is slowly becoming a trend for certain aspects of modern day shooters. Characters feel important and are enjoyable to see grow throughout the game. The littlest details such as the recap during the game install screen and dual weapon combinations provides a fun experience for anyone to pick up play.
