Total War: Rome II is getting re-released as an Empire Edition, in the spirit of the impending release, we look back at the original version of the game. With large maps an army of soldiers at your command, and an epic soundtrack, Rome II brings you a realistic feeling of an army general.

Total War: Rome II is a 2013 RTS game, it is developed by The Creative Assembly and published by Sega. It is available exclusively on PC.

I’ve mentioned it plenty of times before, but I’m not much of an RTS player, however if the story concept and what not is appealing to me in even the slightest I’ll take time to invest some play into the game. Total War: Rome II is one of these times that I’ve done just that. With an amazingly large map to march your troops around as you defeat your enemy, you are given the option of sending as little or as many of the army towards your enemies as you see fit. This brings the following questions: do I send in a small group just to take control of an enemy territory, or do I risk my entire army by sending over one-hundred or so men to completely decimate a single group of the enemy’s forces? Questions like these are key to consider in order to become victorious or fall to the feet of the enemy.

THE GOOD: Total War: Rome II is an excellent RTS, the soundtrack helps bring the game together and the large map is fun to scroll around. Being able to select as many or as few soldiers as needed or wanted in order to take over a territory, but players have be careful as the enemy could even soldiers thus taking out their soldiers in short fashion. The cut scenes both cinematic and in-game were very good looking.

As you control the battlefield you’re also given the option of having your army defend themselves, or go into offense via long range or short range. One of your advisers is there in the left hand corner of the screen to help you out during gameplay. You have to question what path you take, and do so well otherwise your army is going to die.

THE BAD: A.I. from your army wasn’t always the greatest, this occurred often when trying to control multiple groups at once.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Total War: Rome II is a strong RTS that brings the fun.  With it’s large map, epic soundtrack, and great graphics Total War fans have a lot to dig with Rome II. Controlling more than a single group of soldiers made strategizing easier, and the adviser was fairly helpful. AI could be a bit wonky while trying to control large groups of soldiers however.
