Telltale Games continues to expand it’s repertoire of episodic games with the latest entry; Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. While the comics of the same name have received moderate success compared to much larger Marvel properties, the series has received a bit of a resurgence in heightened popularity due to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, which features a film based on the series. In Telltale’s incarnation, main character and hero of The Guardians; Star-Lord looks to take down long standing enemy Thanos, and discovers the mysterious Eternity Forge in the pilot episode.

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is an 2017 point-and-click adventure game, it is developed and published by Telltale Games, and is currently available on PC, iPhone, Android, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

The Guardians as they appear in Telltale’s take on the series.

Taking place in a currently undisclosed point in the series, we find the Guardians randomly traversing through space, it isn’t until a distress call from the Nova Corps being sent concerning the impending threat of Thanos: The Mad Titan that causes our heroes to spring into action. Full of the franchise’s central comedic tone and music obsession, episode one of Guardians starts off in an extremely promising way.

Star-Lord takes flight.

THE GOOD: The first thing one has to recognize when playing Guardians of the Galaxy is the fact that the series is exactly like you’d hope in a near mirror image of the film, though not to be confused as a bad thing, as the film is a near mirror image of the comic book series. The comedy and tribute to 60s-80s hits in music is spot on to what we should want to see in any Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation, and the reworked gameplay feels almost one-hundred percent exclusive to Telltale’s Guardians.

A near perfect adaption.

THE BAD: Nothing in particular.

Gameplay of Guardians of the Galaxy.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Guardians of the Galaxy Episode One starts off with a fairly solid bang, more than Telltale’s most recent efforts not named The Walking Dead. The voice cast due their job of bringing the characters to life well, and Telltale truly captures the spirit of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in excellent form. Here’s hoping this becomes a regularly pleasant surprise from Telltale.
