One Piece: Unlimited World Red is the latest video game in the One Piece franchise. Appearing on both handhelds and consoles, Unlimited World Red proves to be even more entertaining than it’s Pirate Warriors counterpart. Once again reminding us that it’s not impossible to develop solid anime games.

One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a 2014 action adventure game, it is developed by Ganbarion and published by Bandai Namco. It is available on Playstation 3, Wii U, PS Vita, and Nintendo 3DS.

Unlimited World Red is in some ways a lot like Bandai’s previous One Piece video game title Pirate Warriors, however early on in the game you’ll notice some key differences such as the fact that only three members of the Straw Hat pirates are allowed on the screen simultaneously, whereas in Pirate Warriors every member of the crew and then some share the screen. There’s a level up system in Unlimited World Red such as the former title, but there’s also mini-games such as fishing and more.

THE GOOD: The RPG and free-roaming elements of Unlimited World Red is perhaps two of it’s greatest highlights. As you sail your way across the sea you’ll be treated to a large array of secrets and treasures, some of which that can only be obtained by certain character abilities, such as Chopper’s dig and Zorro’s cut. These abilities help gain useful items that would otherwise be missed while completing the game unless you did a second run in the area, which is something you’ll likely be doing anyway nine times out of ten. Players can shop and edit their characters with items and new word techniques that have certain effects and abilities.

One thing I enjoyed about Unlimited World Red was the effort to keep the game looking like the anime graphically, and it’s as close as a video game can get for the time being. There’s also side quests that range from catching bugs to defeating bosses to tide you over if you tire of the main story for a bit.

THE BAD: While there are other areas to go to due to them being apart of the story, your main area is going to be the central island from the start of the game. Though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing in of itself, it does get a little tiresome having to go back and forth between the opening town and the story area when you’re in need of supplies. It’s also a bit of a downer that only three Straw Hats are allowed on screen at once.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: The Straw Hats’ latest adventure is definitely more fun than it’s previous one, in fact it may be one of the greatest One Piece games to date. Though it does have it’s flaws, such as the character limit and forced back and forth traveling. Still Unlimited World Red is not only a solid anime/manga game, but an overall great RPG action adventure game.
