Ash and friends continue his adventures in the Johto region in Pokemon: Johto League Champions Collection. In this season of Pokemon, Ash faces the Goldenrod City Gym Leader, Brock enters a Pokemon Beauty Contest with an old friend, enter a balloon race and more.
Pokemon: Johto League Champions is the fourth season of the Pokemon anime, it is produced by OLM Inc, and licensed by Viz Media. It is currently available on DVD in English.
Continuing the Johto League arc, Johto League Champions is full of some filler to kill time, but still has enough canon to keep the story moving along at a solid pace. Admittedly though, with the Pokemon anime it’s always been hard to tell the real difference between canon and filler with quite a few segments.
THE GOOD: Pokemon: Johto League Champions continues the fun and silly randomness of the beloved anime series. Taking place almost immediately after the last Johto League arc, Ash faces off against the Goldenrod City gym, this battle is followed by a number of misadventures such Ash’s Bayleaf getting too attached for it’s own good. Team Rocket remains as one of the best comedic relief moments in the series.
THE BAD: This set seemed a bit too filler compared to most of the Pokemon sets, which granted has a handful of filler themselves.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Pokemon: Johto League Champions Collection continues the Johto League arc and feature some continuation to the story here and there. While still fun, the Champions arc also has a ton of filler, I know people should be used to filler in Pokemon by now all things considered, but it’d be nice to get some more straight forward storylines. Otaku Dome gives Pokemon: Johto League Champions an 77 out of 100.
