Taking place in 1999 exactly 11 years after the events of Stardust Crusaders (and the final battle with Dio), Diamond is Unbreakable sets in the city of Morioh where Josuke Higashikata once living a normal teenage life is one day visited by his much older nephew Jotaro Kujo, who informs him of his birth father Joseph Joestar and his potential for a stand ability, which he seemingly has already manifested. After a quick brawl the two concede and Jotaro continues his investigation for the Speedwagon Foundation without Josuke’s aide. Sometime later a serial killer and rapist with a stand kills Josuke’s grandfather forcing him to work together with Jotaro and his new best friend Koichi to hunt the killer down and the person responsible for granting the killer his stand.
THE GOOD: Part one of Diamond is Unbreakable features two arcs the serial killer/rapist stand wielder arc, and the search for the arrow arc. In the first half of part one Josuke upon meeting his older nephew Jotaro is thrust into the world of the Joestars when he learns of his heritage and is unable to prevent his grandfather’s death at the hands of a notorious killer. After defeating and permanently imprisoning the killer inside a rock which becomes a tourist attraction, Josuke & Koichi encounter the Nijimura brothers who are in possession of the stand granting arrow which gave the killer his power. The younger Nijimura, Okuyasu wields a powerful stand known as The Hand which can cut through space-time to increase & decrease distance between himself and his opponent, while the older Nijimura, Keicho has a stand known as Bad Company which grants him the power to manifest a miniature army. The two were using the arrow in hopes of granting someone an ability to end the life of their cursed father. After having a battle with Josuke, Okuyasu begins to have a change of heart upon being healed by Josuke post-fight. When a fatally wounded Koichi is taken hostage by Keicho as leverage against Josuke, Okuyasu goes against his brother and helps Josuke recover Koichi so he can be healed of his injury. Josuke & Koichi (who begins to manifest a stand after being pierced by the arrow) work together to defeat Keicho, meanwhile a rogue stand known as Red Hot Chili Pepper which relies on electricity to move & attack attempts to kill Okuyasu leading to Keicho sacrificing his life to save his brother. Chili Pepper escapes with the arrow as Okuyasu and the others vow to stop him.
The second part of Diamond is Unbreakable also features two arc; the arrow recovery arc & the Yoshikage Kira arc. Following immediately from part one the first half of part two opens with Okuyasu becoming an ally to Josuke, Koichi, and Jotaro as they hunt Red Hot Chili Pepper and his stand wielder. During their search they meet a large array of stand users including: a manga artist who can use his stand to gather personal intel on his enemies, a man who possesses the ability to gain an advantage upon every lie told when his stand is activated, a young woman who can use her hair as a weapon (who eventually becomes Koichi’s girlfriend), a kid who can make copies of other people and many, many, more. Eventually the group find and defeat Chili Pepper & his wielder only for the arrow to be taken once more. After some time passes another serial killer known as Kira begins to make a stir in the once quiet town of Morioh with several victims being made public knowledge. Manga artist Rohan & Koichi befriend the ghosts of two of Kira’s earlier victims and they vow to stop him. As the Joestars inch closure to Kira’s identity after killing one of their comrades, nearly stopping him in one instance he uses an ally of the Joestar’s stand which allows her to change the appearance of others to change his image before killing her once again granting him incognito. Several months pass before Kira begins to fall into bad habits and the Joestars get close to stopping him. The son of the man whose live Kira stole helps the Joestars track Kira down and he is ultimately defeated & killed in the battle.
JoJo part 4 is a favorite of many for several reasons: colorful palettes, character development for the heroes & villain characters, the evolution of lead Josuke, and many others. Araki has an uncanny ability to have each arc feel like such a divide from the previous arcs to the point that they almost feel like completely new series from one another. With each creative decision poured onto the evolution of the JoJo series as a whole it’s mo wonder why it continues to grow in popularity as its introduced into more and more audiences over time.
THE BAD: The main story arcs take a bit to pick back up due to several small filler arcs, but this is due to a number of side characters needing to be established for their own unique importance to the the final arc.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: The fourth part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is an extremely entertaining one with a more than acceptable dub, great building for it’s world and characters, and a finale that feels earned towards the end of it’s run. Things will only get even crazier from here upon the time anime viewers start Part 5/Golden Wind. Otaku Dome gives JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable a 90 out of 100.
