The second canon film to Dragon Ball’s historic mythos gets an anime remake in Dragon Ball Super Part Two. Featuring the return of the merciless tyrant Frieza, Goku and Vegeta must use the new power of Gods they’ve unlocked to defeat the ultimate evil, whom has obtained god-like powers himself.

Dragon Ball Super is a 2015 shounen anime series, it is produced by Toei Animation, and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray in English.

Editor’s Note: A review copy of Dragon Ball Super Part Two was received from Funimation Entertainment.

The most evilest of evils; Frieza returns.

Giving the 2015 film a made for TV revamp, Dragon Ball Super establishes new canon for Akira Toriyama’s sequel to part two of the universally acclaimed Dragon Ball manga series (aka Dragon Ball Z for the anime). In the second season of Dragon Ball Super, Frieza has been revived from Hell and is looking to take on his revenge on Goku, however after learning of his defeating of Majin Buu, he comes to realize how powerful the Saiyan has become overtime since his death, and thus Frieza is forced to hone his martial arts training for the very first time in his life.

The original Z-Fighters make a return to battle in the Resurrection F arc.

THE GOOD: While still a retelling of what we’ve already seen before, at the very least the second arc in the new anime series at least attempts to take advantage of the fact that it’s apart of a new series. With the return of Captain Ginyu and other “for TV” edits being introduced, Super is finally learning that it’s apart of a brand new storyline.

Even with the new edits, like Battle of Gods, Resurrection F’s TV adaptation fails to live up to the film.

THE BAD: Like the previous film to TV edit, it feels like a cop out. The quality isn’t as good as the original film version as well from a writing standpoint.

Though a valiant effort, Super’s second arc like the previous still fails to live up to the hype.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Dragon Ball Super at this point in it’s run is still finding out what it wants to be, however it does do a far better job here than in the TV edit for Battle of the Gods. With some new scenery which takes a true advantage over the fact that it’s a brand new storyline within the series canon it does make things hopeful for the present future. Otaku Dome gives Dragon Ball Super Part Two a 75 out of 100.
