Editor’s Note: This review contains near complete to complete spoilers for Attack on Titan Season 3.

Attacking Titans is one thing, but actual people? That’s a whole other situation.

Following the betrayal Reiner & Bertholt being revealed as the Armored & Colossal Titans respectively, Wall Maria is on high alert. Fearing anyone within the walls could be a Titan the Scouts try to expand upon Eren and his own Titan powers through the use of experiments. Hoping to somehow plug Wall Maria from the previous Titan attack the group works quickly to save humanity. However, an old comrade of Levi named Kenny and his team step in to aide the enemy in the Scouts’ defeat.

Everything experienced comes breaking down for Eren and his friends.

THE GOOD: While small the change in direction for enemies is a rather effective one in season three and we quickly see the toll it takes on the Scouts. Armin ends up killing a human enemy who was about to end the life of a comrade and is disgusted yet understanding of what he had to do. It’s taken even harder when they come to realize that the enemy herself hesitated in the attack. Even with the lack of Titan threats Attack on Titan has an uncanny ability to make everything being a threat to the Scouts not only seem plausible but realistic in its world. If it’s not Titans or humans it could be something totally out the window like animals.

Historia is at the center of all of Eren & co.’s troubles thus far.

As the Scouts have to contend with Kenny and his group, Eren is captured & a man who claims to be Historia’s biological father gets involved wanting her to ultimately become a Titan by eating Eren and taking his Titan powers. Eren has a mental breakdown remembering all the suffering experienced & caused by himself and agrees to be eaten only for a disgusted Historia to pull him out of his slump which allows him to unlock a new hardening ability that saves all his comrades who came to rescue him. Historia’s father uses the Titan serum and becomes an enormous monster of a Titan, but is defeated by a group effort of Titan Eren and the Scouts. Meanwhile, Historia is crowned the true Queen as the previous King was outed as a fake and the group controlling things behind the scenes being enemies of humanity. The action and drama in AoT season 3 is getting grittier & darker as we reach the latter storylines of  Hajime Isayama’s story.

Attack on Titan season 3 rarely misses a beat.

THE BAD: Nothing in particular.

As Eren’s Titan powers grow and expand so do the threats looking to take them from him.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Attack on Titan season three while (mostly) Titan free had plenty of new threats & enemies for the saviors of humanity to face with and all of the emotional turmoil that came with them. As the story continues to grow and evolve so does our heroes as they are continuously pushed to the limits and the mental edge. Otaku Dome gives Attack on Titan Season 3, Part 1 a 90 out of 100.
