Attack on Titan is the story of Eren Yeager who vows to dispel his world of the vicious and deadly Titans. One of whom is responsible for the death of his beloved mother and the very reason for his cause. Attack on Titan’s beautiful animation and heartfelt story brings viewers an amazing anime experience, as we see these humans facing off against an seemingly unstoppable force.
Attack on Titan is an 2013 Shonen anime series, it is produced by Studio W.I.T. & Profduction IG, and licensed by Funimation in America. The series is currently available via multiple streaming services including Netflix, Crunchy Roll, and others, as well as DVD and Blu-Ray.
I was first introduced to Attack on Titan by a few friends, after months of avoiding the series, I finally decided on giving it a try, and what an amazing 25 episode journey it’s been. Warning: This review includes complete to near complete spoilers for the entire 25 episode run of Attack on Titan, you have been warned.
THE GOOD: Attack on Titan is an absolutely amazing anime series that every Shonen anime fan should experience even if it’s merely a viewing of the pilot episode. The characters of Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, along with Armin Arlert, brings the show to life as it frequently visits their different narratives and the reasons each chose to join the army. The animation is pretty, which was surprising given it’s manga counterpart’s rough design, not that the manga’s art design is horrible, but it takes some getting used to.
The Titan designs were interesting, especially considering one in particular was inspiring by current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, who was wrestling in Japan at the time of development during his post-original WWE run. The violence featured in Attack on Titan brought emotion due to the characters being portrayed so well, and the amazing pace and story development is something we may not see matched for at least a half a decade from now.
One episode in particular (episode 5), featured one of the most ground breaking anime experiences I’ve seen in quite some time. The raw emotion and intensity of the episode was on an absolute high, and the shocking ending with Eren’s “death”, had my jaw dropping for a few moments and then some. I actually had to make sure I wasn’t being trolled or something and re-watched the scene a few times before I could believe what I saw.
Following Eren’s “death” the story takes a wild turn as it’s soon discovered that Humans can transform into Titans, and even further revealed that Titans were once Human, but went feral sometime after the transformation process. The shocking background of the Titans added more intensity to the story, as did the revelation of Annie being a Titan shifter.
THE BAD: While it has great pacing and top notch action sequences, Attack on Titan has a bit too much talking for a Shonen anime series. Sometimes it’s a bit off putting and takes away from a previously big action scene.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Attack on Titan is one of the most incredible anime experiences viewers will ever have. Awesome pacing, action, and narrative along with great characters and animation puts this series in high caliber compared to other Shonen. Though the talking can slow things down a bit, the overall presentation brings a great experience for anime fans of all types. Otaku Dome gives Attack on Titan Parts 1 & 2 an 93 out of t100 and an 95 out of 100 respectively.
