One of the first in an upcoming long line of DC Animated films focusing on the New 52 storyline (s) has finally released in the form of Justice League: War. The new Origin tale which “edits” a few key scenes of the original Justice League source material may upset some, but diehard DC Animation fans will be pleased.

Justice League: War is a 2014 animated DC film, it is distributed by Warner Home Video. The film releases to DVD & Blu-Ray on February 4, 2014, and is currently available via digital distribution.

Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern as they appear in JL War.

I’ve never really been a fan of comics, but when it came to TV & Film DC’s animation branch has always been one of my absolute favorites. I’ve seen every animated film that DC & Warner Bros. have produced together to date (except for maybe Emerald Knights), and they always impress, no matter the storyline or main character that’s being focused on. Quality wise, DC’s animated films have and perhaps always will impress

THE GOOD: War starts off with the introduction of Green Lantern (who for some reason was in Gotham City) and Batman taking on one of Darkseid’s demonic soldiers. This provided some cool action scenes and a little bit of comedy from a woman Lantern saved “What’s the catch? How much is it gonna cost me?”. Superman’s introduction would later follow, with the aforementioned hero just destroying Batman & Green Lantern, though both did but up a good enough fight against the Kryptonian.

Wonder Woman & Shazam were used as comic relief for the most part.

War provided some nice dialogue and fantastic action scenes. One of my favorite in particular was the plane scene that featured Superman & Wonder Woman. Some of the jokes & comedy in JL: War was pretty funny, like Wonder Woman praising the ice cream vendor. Cyborg’s back story was pretty interesting, and it was nice for people who don’t follow the comics to finally know about Victor Stone’s origin. Darkseid made a pretty cool entrance and was kicking some serious ass, and there’s an awesome end credits scene that fans should see.

THE BAD: I can’t say for Shazam, but I know quite a few fans will be pissed about Wonder Woman being used as a comedic character. And speaking of Shazam, his voice was pretty bad, he sounded like a 16 year old still going through puberty. Wonder Woman kind of sounded like a teenager as well.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Justice League: War is a nice animated introduction into the New 52 storyline, great action and comedy provided makes this film pretty watchable. Some off putting voice acting and the ignoring of the original source material may cause some to avoid this one however. Darkseid had some pretty awesome scenes, and we finally got to see the origin of Victor Stone animated. Otaku Dome gives Justice League: War an 76 out of 100.
