A Certain Magical Index’s Misaka spinoff A Certain Scientific Railgun returns in season two; dubbed titularly as A Certain Scientific Railgun S. Misaka once again stars in the second season of her spinoff, this time however she gets some aid from other fellow Index characters such as Accelerator & love interest Toma.
A Certain Scientific Railgun S is the 2013 second season of A Certain Scientific Railgun, it is produced by J.C. Staff and licensed by Funimation. It is currently available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and streaming platforms.
Still taking place before the events of and sometimes during the events of A Certain Magical Index, A Certain Scientific Railgun S continues to explore one of the most popular characters in the franchise, Mikoto Mikasa. Introducing new characters and giving further background on previous characters tied to Mikasa, the series still works really well without Index and Toma starring.
THE GOOD: A Certain Scientific Railgun S is a great spinoff focusing on Mikasa and her friends, and it’s still refreshing after seeing the Toma and Index starring A Certain Magical Index. Despite it’s lighter tone compared to it’s predecessor, Railgun S has some fairly dark and violent moments. As the story progresses you gain a certain appreciation for the cameos by Index characters such as the aforementioned Toma, which were wisely used as not to distract the audience from Mikasa being the main character. The action sequences are still pretty good as well.
THE BAD: Nothing really.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: A Certain Scientific Railgun S continues Mikasa’s great run as series lead. Full of further background on Mikasa’s character and her friends, as well as cameos from Index characters, Railgun S continues to be as fun as A Certain Magical Index. Great action scenes, animation, and other positives give Index fans a fantastic spinoff to give a look at. Otaku Dome gives A Certain Scientific Railgun S an 85 out of 100.
